Help support the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences!

The Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences invites you to help support our program. Your donation can be designated to the department for general use or you may choose to support The Robert S. Tyzbir Scholarship Fund or our department`s SOS Program (Summer Opportunity Scholarship). All donations are tax deductible.

The Robert S. Tyzbir Scholarship Fund

The Robert S. Tyzbir Scholarship Fund was established by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences with charitable gifts from colleagues, family, friends and former students of Dr. Robert S. Tyzbir in honor of his accomplishments as an outstanding teacher and advisor over three decades (and counting), his devotion to the fields of nutrition and dietetics, and his dedication to the welfare of his students and the University of Vermont at large.

Spendable income from the Robert S. Tyzbir Scholarship Fund will be used to provide scholarship awards to outstanding undergraduate students from the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

Your gift to this fund will help honor Dr. Tyzbir upon the occasion of his recognition by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) with the 2004 Excellence in College and University Teaching in the Food and Agricultural Sciences Award.

The Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences SOS Program

The SOS Program is designed to pay a summer "scholarship" to an NFS major and in return that student works at a designated site that serves the under-served, low income population in a Vermont community. The scholarship enables the student to earn and learn during their summer break. They earn some money while gaining practical knowledge and improving the quality of life for Vermonters.

The Department works with the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger (http://www.vtnohunger.org/) in choosing host sites for the student (the host sites do not pay the students; they are totally funded by our SOS Program). Students have worked in Burlington, Winooski, Middlebury, Enosburg and Plymouth.

The students have been receiving $5,000 for their summer work which begins the week after the spring semester ends and concludes 2 weeks before the start of the fall semester. With your help we can continue this worthwhile endeavor.
